In the article, the subjects of ancient Turks’ horse breeding and horse cult were involved in investigation based on the usage functions of the chovgan game in the work of the 17th century Azerbaijani poet Masihi were discussed. İnitially, it is mentioned that the role of the horse in domestic life and that the first person who domesticated it and used it as a saddle-horse was a Turk. Among the sources that give such an information are Mahmud Kashgari’s “Diwan lugat-al-turk” , monuments written in old Turkish, Kitabi-Dada Gorgud, The Epic of “Koroghlu”, fairy tales and folklore creativities, where the horse has a place as a human friend and is referred to by special names. Over the years, horses were sanctified and start to function as a cult, worship. However, wars made it necessary to raise young people who can handle horses, and to organize competitions and games. One of such horse games is “chovgan” . Absolutely, the most famous one is also the game of chovgan, the features of the game are discussed in the article, and the etymology of the expression and the game is clarified. G. Tabrizi, N.
