Abstract

-{lAr} Çokluk Ekinin Kapsama Alanı Üzerine

The plural suffix -{lAr}, which is among the noun inflection suffixes in Turkey Turkish, basically has the function of making indefinite plural, although it also has other functions. The suffix that is placed on the nouns, indicates the existence, object, etc. in these uses. However, if it is included in word phrases, there may be differences in the plurality it reports. For example, when you say “kırmızı elbiseler”, is the adjective phrase “kırmızı elbiseler” or “kırmızı elbise”? In other words, does the adjective “kırmızı” complement the plural noun “elbiseler”? Or does the -{lAr} suffix indicate that there is more than one “kırmızı elbise” of the same type, that is, does the adjective phrase acting as a noun fall within the scope of the suffix? Formally, both solutions are possible. Here context must come into play for correct analysis. Again, in the example of “limonata bardakları”, does the plural suffix formally make the word “bardak” on which it falls plural or is the plural structure “limonata bardağı”? The fact that the language is a system requires evaluating the inflection feature of the plural suffix as a whole, both semantically and formally. Since it is thought that taking the context into consideration will be a guide in word analysis, in this study, the use of plural suffixes in different structures such as noun phrases, adjective phrases, and possessive phrases in the samples of written and spoken Turkiye Turkish is examined and the scope area of the suffix is evaluated with a context-based approach. The examples examined show that both formal and semantic evaluation should be made when determining the structure that is inflected with the plural suffix, that is, the scope area of the suffix.
