İsmail Gaspıralı (1851-1914), one of the important intellectuals of the Turkish World, has been active in many fields, both in education and in the press, and has worked for the modernization of Turkish communities. Gaspiralı, who reached many people and communities through the Tercüman newspaper he published, not only wrote political and intellectual articles, but also published serialized novels and stories. Although he expressed his thoughts on issues such as courage, how the ideal country should be, inequality between men and women and the place of women in society in the stories he wrote, the main issue he insisted on was the issue of education. As a result of this problem, the difference between East and West countries has been revealed and the backwardness of the East has been explained. Based on the view that the elimination of backwardness can be achieved with proper education, he designed a new education model called Usul-i Cedit. When we look at İsmail Gaspıralı’s novels and stories in which he tells about the consequences of the problems caused by lack of education or wrong education models, it is seen that he put his finger on a problem that does not attract attention at first glance, the problem of “European” - among many other problems. In this study, Cevat Bey, the son of Ahmet Bey, who has European style characteristics in İsmail Gaspıralı’s story “Ahmet Bey Taşkesenli and Bedros Ağa Karakaşyan” (1895) is taken as the center, and the European type sample, one of the protagonists of Ahmet Mithat Efendi’s Felâtun Bey ile Rakım Efendi (1875) novel. It will be compared with Felâtun Bey and the example of wrong Westernization caused by the education problem will be emphasized.
