Abstract

Enderunlu Vâsıf Divanı’nda Bulunmayan Ramazan Kasidesi

The features that determine the content of classical Turkish literature texts constitute literary genres. Poems about the month of Ramadan are called ramazaniye or ramazanname. One of the poets who wrote works in this genre, which emerged in classical Turkish literature from the fifteenth century onwards, is Enderunlu Vâsıf. A Ramadan ode (ramazaniye) that was not found in the published divan of the poet who died in 1824 was the subject of this study. This ode (serial number 370-44, Başkanlık Osmanlı Arşiv (Ministry Ottoman Archive)) is a Ramadan-related text belonging to Enderunlu Vâsıf. This particular ode contains linguistic and style features from poet’s other three known ramazaniyes, as well as a humorous perspective that was preferred by him in religious writings. The content of the odes written from this perspective illustrates the style of Enderunlu Vâsıf's approach to poetry and art. This study aims to introduce one of the texts, in which the milieu of the poet's period, the people he took as examples and his poetry style are seen, to Turkish literature. With the arrival of the month of Ramadan, poets present represented their ramazaniyes to sultans, statesmen, and patrons. Enderunlu Vâsıf presented this particular fifty-couplet ode to Ahmed Efendi. This ode of the poet, which contains concepts and analogies related to Ramadan, is important since it is a new example of the ramazaniye genre.
